A day after Jantar Mantar was denotified as an official protest site, members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) entered its premises on Tuesday morning with the Tiranga to “reclaim” the site. Amid heavy security deployment in the area, the Delhi Police detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das.

Dipke shared a video on X, formerly Twitter, showing CJP members crossing locked gates to enter the Jantar Mantar premises. In the post, Dipke said, “You cannot denotify the resistance, @narendramodi”.

“JANTAR MANTAR HAS BEEN RECLAIMED! WE HAVE ENTERED JANTAR MANTAR AND NOW WE ARE BEING DETAINED! But this is a message to all of us young gen! We can do it! Gyanu, you’re done bro! @Cockroachisback,” Saurav Das said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Dipke said several other members of their team, including Ajinkya Shinde, had also been detained. When Dipke was placed under preventive detention on October 10, ahead of the CJP’s call for a protest in central Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Gupta, he had named Shinde as the person who would lead the movement in his absence.

In a pre-recorded video, Abhijeet said, “If you are watching this video, it means that I, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka have been arrested. In our absence, Ajinkya will lead the protest and the CJP movement. Please follow him.”

However, the protest was thwarted after the police denied permission for the gathering. Those who arrived at the protest site were detained.

Jantar Mantar Denotified

The Delhi Police on Monday announced that Jantar Mantar would no longer be recognised as an official protest site, identifying three alternative venues for future demonstrations. According to the official order signed by the Delhi Police, the three designated venues are Ramlila Ground in Old Delhi, CBD Ground in East Delhi and Burari Ground in North Delhi.

Notably, the three venues are approximately 3 km, 13.5 km and 44 km away from Jantar Mantar in central Delhi, respectively.

Further details and revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the three locations will be shared soon. The order stated that the decision had been taken on the recommendations of a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The decision comes at a time when the CJP and the INDIA bloc have been actively organising protests, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
